A mixture of compound B-201 (2.0 g, 12 mmol) and manganese dioxide (1 1 g, 0.12 mol) in dichloromethane (40 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. On completion, the mixture was filtered, and the resulting filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give crude compound B-202 (1.5 g, 76% yield) as a colorless oil. Phosphorus oxybromide (2.7 g) was added to a solution of 6-hydroxymethylbenzo[b]thiophene (0.7 g) in ether (50 ml) at reflux. After 3 h at reflux the solution was washed with water, aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate, and brine, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give the title compound (0.7 g).
