The synthesis of functionalised diaryltetraynes and their transport properties in single-molecule junctions

The synthesis and characterisation is described of six diaryltetrayne derivatives [Ar-(C?C)4-Ar] with Ar=4-NO2-C 6H4- (NO24), 4-NH(Me)C6H 4- (NHMe4), 4-NMe2C6H4- (NMe 24), 4-NH2-(2,6-dimethyl)C6H4- (DMeNH24), 5-indolyl (IN4) and 5-benzothienyl (BTh4). X-ray molecular structures are reported for NO24, NHMe4, DMeNH24, IN4 and BTh4. The stability of the tetraynes has been assessed under ambient laboratory conditions (20 C, daylight and in air): NO24 and BTh4 are stable for at least six months without observable decomposition, whereas NHMe4, NMe24, DMeNH24 and IN4 decompose within a few hours or days. The derivative DMeNH24, with ortho-methyl groups partially shielding the tetrayne backbone, is considerably more stable than the parent compound with Ar=4-NH2C6H4 (NH24). The ability of the stable tetraynes to anchor in Au|molecule|Au junctions is reported. Scanning-tunnelling-microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) and mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ) techniques are employed to investigate single-molecule conductance characteristics. Lay anchor: Oligoynes with a range of terminal functional groups, for example, benzo[b]thiophene (BTh4; see figure) have been synthesised. The charge transport characteristics of oligoynes in single-molecular junctions anchored between gold electrodes were studied. With careful choice of the anchor group oligoynes are shown to be a viable family of stable molecular wires for molecular-electronics applications.

It was found that the C(sp)?B(dan) bond of alkynyl?B(dan)s can be directly used for palladium-catalyzed carbon?carbon bond-forming reactions with aryl(alkenyl) halides and allylic carbonates as electrophiles, thus delivering unsymmetrical internal alkynes and unconjugated 1,4-enynes, respectively. With acyl chlorides as electrophiles, ynone synthesis is also promoted by a palladium catalyst with the assistance of a copper co-catalyst. These reactions can be achieved as more convenient one-pot reactions, without isolating the alkynyl?B(dan) formed in situ by the zinc-catalyzed dehydrogenative borylation of alkynes with HB(dan). In addition to direct C(sp)?B(dan) bond transformations, the C?C bond in an alkynyl?B(dan) proved to be a promising scaffold for the construction of a multisubstituted alkene, which is synthesized by diboration of the C?C?B(dan) moiety, leading to a triborylalkene followed by iterative regio- and stereoselective Suzuki?Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. As one example, the synthesis of the ethene with four different aryl groups, p-MeC6H4, p-MeOC6H4, p-NCC6H4, and p-F3CC6H4, was attained in high overall yield of 64% in six steps starting from the terminal alkyne, p-MeC6H4C?CH. Besides these synthetic applications of the alkynyl?B(dan), the scope of the alkynyl substrate in the zinc-catalyzed dehydrogenative borylation was expanded to enhance the reliability as a provider of the alkynyl?B(dan). Consequently, 42 alkynes were found to participate in the dehydrogenative borylation as substrates; these are alkyl-, alkenyl-, aryl-, heteroaryl-, ferrocenyl-, silyl-, and borylalkynes, with or without a variety of functional groups. Lastly, a new method for preparing HB(dan), as a sulfide-free, cost-saving, and reaction-time-saving route, is disclosed. (Figure presented.).

Copper/Palladium-Catalyzed Cyclization/Cross-Coupling Cascade Reaction of 2-gem-Dibromovinyl Aryl Selenides: Synthesis of 2-Substituted Benzo[b]selenophenes

Copper/palladium-catalyzed multicomponent cyclization reactions, which combine 2-gem-dibromovinyl aryl selenides with a nucleophilic source, were applied to the synthesis of 2-substituted benzo[b]selenophenes. A systematic study of the cyclization system revealed that the mutual action between copper and palladium salts is essential for the formation of products in good yields, avoiding the formation of hydrogenated benzo[b]selenophenes. The versatility of 2-bromobenzo[b]selenophenes was also studied by palladium-catalyzed reactions with boronic acids, Grignard reagents and methyl acrylate affording the cross-coupled products in good yields. In addition, the reaction of 2-bromobenzo[b]selenophene towards halogen-lithium exchange reactions followed by the addition of aldehyde afforded the corresponding secondary alcohol. Thermally-stable 2,3-diphenylated benzotiophene containing host materials for red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

This study reports a series of benzo[b]thiophene (BT) derivatives with good electronic properties as host materials for red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs). We applied thermally-stable materials for red PHOLEDs which contain BT and carbazole moieties which also provide a good charge transport ability, as well as a good charge confinement effect (T1 > 2.25 eV). To control the appropriate charge transporting ability, two different structures having one or two carbazole units connected to the single BT moiety were prepared. Using this approach, we found that the material with a single carbazole and a single BT unit showed the best current efficiency and external quantum efficiency (up to 23.6 cd/A and 12.8%, respectively). The results of the experiment also suggest that BT could be used as an electron-transporting unit when utilized with carbazole moiety, although it has previously been utilized as a p-type material.

Our process yields the target compound by distillation under reduced pressure and is safe, highly batch efficient, cost-effective, and high yielding. Furthermore, manufacturing on a pilot scale was also accomplished through our approach.
