The synthetic approach to the DTEs was based on successive selective palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of 5-susbtituted-2-methyl-3-thiophenyl indium reagents with 3,4-dichloromaleimides. The required organoindium reagents were prepared from 2-methyl-3,5-dibromothiophene by a selective (C-5) coupling reaction with triorganoindium compounds (R3In) and subsequent metal-halogen exchange. The coupling reactions usually gave good yields and have a high atom economy with substoichiometric amounts of R3In. The results of photochemical studies show that these novel dithienylmaleimides undergo a photocyclization reaction upon irradiation in the UV region and a photocycloreversion after excitation in the visible region, thus they can be used as photochemical switches. ON-OFF operations can be repeated in successive cycles without appreciable loss of effectiveness in the process.

A series of tetracyclic quinoline- and quinoxalinecarboxamides were prepared, and their cytotoxicities were evaluated in a series of murine human tumor cell lines. Most of the quinoline derivatives were prepared by an adaptation of the Pfitzinger synthesis, followed by thermal decarboxylation and coupling with N,N-dimethylethylenediamine via a mixed anhydride method using isobutyl chloroformate. The quinoline analogues showed cytotoxicities broadly similar to those of the known tricyclic acridine-4-carboxamide mixed topoI/II inhibitor DACA, with thieno and indeno analogues being the most active. They showed little decrease in potencies against the Jurkat human leukemia topo II-resistant lines JL(A) and JL(C), suggesting their cytotoxicity does not result primarily from inhibition of topo II. The quinoxaline analogues had more varied IC50 values, being on average less cytotoxic than the quinoline derivatives, but appeared to have a similar mode of action. Overall, this new class of compounds appear to be mixed topo I/II inhibitors, up to 3-fold more cytotoxic than DACA in the human leukemia cell lines studied, with in vivo activity in colon 38 comparable to that of DACA and doxorubicin.

Extending pi-conjugation system with benzene: An effective method to improve the properties of benzodithiophene-based polymer for highly efficient organic solar cells

To obtain a polymer based on benzodithiophene (BDT) owning both a largely extended pi-conjugation system and a low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), a polymer (PBDTBzT-DTffBT) containing benzothienyl-substituted BDT is designed and synthesized. Compared with the polymer (PBDTT-DTffBT) based on thienyl-substituted BDT, PBDTBzT-DTffBT exhibits better thermal stabilities, red-shifted absorption spectra, and stronger intermolecular interactions. The HOMO and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) in PBDTBzT-DTffBT are decreased by 0.11 and 0.13 eV, respectively, which should be attributed to the contribution of the electron-withdrawing group benzene. Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on PBDTBzT-DTffBT and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) exhibit a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.30% with a large open-circuit voltage of 0.90 V under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW/cm2). The PCE is 36% higher than that of the PSCs derived from PBDTT-DTffBT. These findings provide a new approach to design high-performance conjugated polymers for efficient solution-processed PSCs.

A new, practical synthesis of aryl and heteroaryl N-acylureas has been developed via palladium-catalysed carbonylation of aryl or heteroaryl halides in the presence of urea nucleophiles. A range of reactions illustrating the wide scope of this reaction was carried out under microwave irradiation, using either carbon monoxide gas in a vessel equipped with a gas inlet adapter, or molybdenum hexacarbonyl as the carbon monoxide source in standard microwave vials. The reactions proceeded in good to excellent yields. To illustrate the usefulness of this method a one-step synthesis of the important insecticide diflubenzuron is reported.
