Design of reversible multi-electron redox systems using benzochalcogenophenes containing aryl and/or ferrocenyl fragments

2,3-Disubstituted benzo[b]thiophenes, 1,3-disubstituted benzo[c]thiophenes, and 1,3-disubstituted benzo[c]selenophene have been systematically and selectively synthesized from benzo[b]thiophene or phthaloyl dichloride as a starting material, respectively. Characterization of the molecules was performed by physical and spectroscopic means and X-ray crystallographic analyses. The cyclic voltammograms of the chalcogenophene derivatives containing aryl fragments showed well-defined reversible both anodic and cathodic steps derived from the unusually stable 5pi chalcogenophene radical cations and 7pi chalcogenophene radical anions. The cyclic voltammograms of the novel chalcogenophene derivatives containing ferrocenyl fragments showed a well-defined reversible cathodic step derived from the unusually stable 7pi chalcogenophene radical anions and two distinct reversible anodic steps derived from ferrocenium cations separated from each other by a thiophene-heterocycle. The radical character of several novel 7pi chalcogenophene radical anions was measured by ESR spectroscopy.

The use of these aminobenzo[b]thiophenes as coupling components avoids the step of changing the amino group into a bromine atom, like we have done before to perform C-N couplings using the corresponding 3-bromobenzo[b]thiophenes. Nevertheless, the couplings using the methyl 3-aminobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylates were only successful with bromobenzenes bearing electron-withdrawing groups and a bromobiphenyl or with electron deficient rings such us as bromopyridines. Using the latter compounds, different substituted 6H-benzothieno[3,2-d]pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimid-6-ones were obtained by C-N coupling followed by an intramolecular cyclization. These tetracyclic compounds may have interesting biological activity like it was already demonstrated by us for the non substituted derivative.

Three 1,2-bis(2-alkyl-1-benzothiophene-3-yl)perhydrocyclopentenes with different alkyl chain lengths (methyl, ethyl, and propyl) at the reactive carbons were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were compared with those of 1,2-bis(2-alkyl-1-benzothiophene-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentenes. The structures of the perhydrocyclopentenes were analyzed by X-ray crystallography, and their cyclization/cycloreversion reaction and fluorescence quantum yields, and fluorescence lifetimes were measured by steady-state spectroscopy and the time-correlated single photon counting method, respectively. From these results, we found the following three differences between perhydrocyclopentenes and perfluorocyclopentenes. (1) For the closed-ring isomers, the absorption bands of the perhydrocyclopentenes (around 450 nm) shifted to a shorter wavelength than those of the perfluorocyclopentenes (around 530 nm) because of the acceptor nature of the perfluorocyclopentene moiety. (2) The cyclization/cycloreversion quantum yields of the perhydrocyclopentenes were slightly larger than those of the perfluorocyclopentenes in hexane. (3) Interestingly, the fluorescence of both the open- and closed-ring isomers was observed only for the perhydrocyclopentenes, and the lifetimes of the closed-ring isomers were estimated to be <30 ps. The fluorescence of the closed-ring isomers of the perhydrocyclopentenes was mainly due to the suppression of nonradiative deactivation from the excited state directly to the ground state compared with the perfluorocyclopentenes.
