General procedure: A solution of arylcarbaldehyde (10.4 mmol) and (ethoxycarbonylmethylene)triphenylphosphorane (14.6 mmol) in THF (20 mL) was heated at 80 C for 12 h. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, 30 g) using EtOAc-hexane (3:97, v/v) as an eluent to give the (E)-acrylate 9.
