The solution was stirred at -78 C. for 40 min. 1-t-Butoxycarbonyl-4-piperidone (1.84 g, 9.27 mmol) dissolved in THF (10 mL) was added via a cannula at -78 C. The reaction mixture was stirred at -78 C. for 3 h. The reaction was then quenched with 50 mL of water. The mixture was extracted (3¡Á75 mL) with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4 and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to an oil and allowed to stand 3 days in which time the material crystallized. The crystals were rinsed with a mixture of EtOAc/hexanes to give the intermediate title compound as yellow crystals (2.13 g, 72.6%). IR (KBr) 1681, 1429, 1246 cm-1. FD+MS 347.0 (M).
